Remnants
The artifacts that populate our domestic spaces silently witness our most true and private selves; they serve as physical evidence of our existence. Heirlooms, for instance, are imbued with a kind of mysticism. The thing itself becomes a way to tangibly connect to someone absent, lost, or unknown. Items like these authenticate the experience of having known another. Such a souvenir could be immeasurably precious to one person, but completely worthless to another. Paired housewares like salt and pepper shakers appear frequently throughout this series, utilizing the language of objects to explore connection and loss. Alteration of the foil “husks” grants these objects a sense of agency through their personification.
This body of work began as an homage to bronzed baby shoes, gravestone rubbings, and the futile ways in which we attempt to preserve the world around us. Inspired by documentative processes like sun prints, the process of embossing has granted these works liminality between clarity and ambiguity. These compositions preserve only the idea of the original object, depriving it of its intended function. Encased under foil cloaks, these items are forever preserved and absent.
